This is the question,... Is this a Picasso or not?
This is a very interesting oil painting from my late mother's house. She was an absolute Francophile - and organised numerous trips to France for the people who went to her French evening class which was run at St. Alban's College. This was in the loft - and was a VERY great surprise to me and my brother!! To find a painting in the attic that is signed Picasso is not something that happens to me every day! I have looked at it under magnification and it is DEFINITELY an oil painting not a print. You can also feel the rough texture of the paint. As I say, the painting is signed and comes in a very strange frame set up - a lovely gilt frame within an old wooden frame. It measures 15 by 13 inches including the frame and the condition is lovely as it was behind glass, which has preserved it nicely. I have removed the glass because it was such a nightmare to photo! Mostly of interest, is an old written label attached to the back of the inside of the painting. It states, "la Journée Fleurit by Pablo Picasso, 1904. Bought for my personal collection whilst in Paris for the Corcoran deal. Given by Picasso to Milandes in 1920, acquired by me 1955. 15.8.55. Ronald C. Schwab". I don't know anything more about it - and given the fact that I am a not an art expert - it is offered "as seen". Offered without reserve.
I've done a bit of digging on on google and I've found a website with Picasso's works listed. As far as I can tell - this is fairly typical of his work from about 1900 - 1904, during which time he did several still life paintings like this. I've attached an image of a similar work as an illustration. Whether it is by Picasso or not I don't know - I guess most likely not, but in the absence of one of the world experts giving his / her learned opinion - no one knows.
